Gee Atherton, the legendary downhill mountain biker, is on a mission to take us where no cyclist has dared to go before. This is the fourth installment in the Ridgeline series, and it’s bigger, badder, and crazier than ever.
The Dolomites – Nature’s Rollercoaster
As the name hints, this time, Gee is taking us to the awe-inspiring Dolomites. Forget about those neatly manicured bike parks; this is about venturing into the wild mountains with your buddies. No rocks were harmed in the making of this movie; it’s all about conquering the gnarliest terrain that Mother Nature can throw at you. And believe us, the Dolomites don’t disappoint.
An Epic Adventure
The journey kicked off in March with a site reconnaissance mission that quickly turned into a realization that they were, as Gee put it, “out-mountain’d.” Think long hikes through knee-deep snow, nights spent poring over maps, and sunrise meetups. Filming in August brought better weather but introduced grueling eight-hour hike days with ladders, roped climbs, and abseils.
The crew, loaded up with camera gear, drones, grub, and Gee’s trusty bike, faced some of the most challenging terrain they’ve ever encountered. It was a true test of both physical and mental endurance, with the thirst for adventure and the drive to survive pushing them forward.
The Atherton AM.170 – The Ultimate Sidekick
Through this jaw-dropping adventure, Gee relied on the Atherton AM.170, a bike that’s tough as nails, able to withstand being hauled up cliffs on ropes, yet light enough to hike up those treacherous mountains. It was his trusty sidekick, tackling every steep and rocky inch of the terrain.
The Dream Team Behind the Scenes
Behind every epic film, there’s an equally epic crew, and Ridgeline IV is no exception. Photographer Dan Griffiths from Moonhead Media and Gee’s right-hand partner were there from day one. In such perilous terrain, they brought in the big guns – Brodie Hood, a high-altitude and adventure specialist, whose credentials include flying drones to the peak of Everest. Talk about next level!
Conquering Fear
One of the most intense challenges for the team was becoming numb to the exposure and losing that “life-preserving fear.” What started as cautious movements along exposed tracks turned into full-on sprinting along cliff edges. Brodie Hood and fellow cameraman Matt McCormick kept the squad safe, allowing them to say yes to challenges they wouldn’t have faced solo.
What’s on the Horizon?
As Gee summed it up, “Going to places that are bigger than us, where we have to be at the top of our game, is always cool.” This project has the potential to go global, and we can’t wait to see what’s next from Gee Atherton.
